Prins Jørgens Gård with Christiansborg Palace, the Supreme Court and Thorvaldsens Museum.
Prins Jørgens Gård is a place on Slotsholmen in Copenhagen. The square is located between Christiansborg Palace, Christiansborg Palace Church and Thorvaldsens Museum. From Prins Jørgens Gård there is entrance to the Royal House’s representation rooms at Christiansborg, the Prime Minister’s Office and the Supreme Court.
Prince Jørgens Gård is named after the Danish Prince Jørgen, who was the brother of Christian 5. In 1670 Christian 5th gave the order to demolish an older house and build a stable building for use by the brother in this place.
In Prins Jørgens Gård are four bronze statues of figures from Greek mythology performed by Bertel Thorvaldsen and Herman Wilhelm Bissen. They represent Jason, Minerva, Æskulap and Nemesis respectively.
The Supreme Court has its main entrance at Prins Jørgens Gård, and here you have reused the entrance from the King’s Gate on the second Christiansborg castle, which, however, has now been lifted to a location at the end of the entrance stairs.
